The Daily, the iPad newspaper amalgamation between Apple and News Corp has officially launched with the tablet exclusive digital newspaper available to download from the Apple App Store now with subscriptions costing $0.99 per week or $39.99 per year.
Taking to the stage of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City News Corp Chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch was joined by Apple’s Vice President of Internet Services Eddy Cue to unveil the latest innovative system for providing news content in the digital age.
Singing the praises of Apple, Steve Jobs and the innovative iPad Murdoch announced: “We’re honoured that Apple has put its backing behind this venture,” before adding the rise in the tablet market pioneered by the iPad has required the news industry to rethink its digital position. The media mogul said: “Simply put the iPad demands we completely re-imagine our craft.”
Announcing “Our target audience is the 50 million Americans who are expected to own tablets in the next year,” Murdoch went on the out the intimate details of The Daily which will offer over 100 pages of original news, life, entertainment, opinion and sports-every single day of the year. Joining the standard newsprint copy The Daily will be brought to life by interactive content including 360-degree photographs, ‘hot spots’, info graphics and fully customisable sports offerings individually attuned to user’s wants and needs.
Unveiled alongside The Daily, and responsible for its most recent setback, Apple announced that the Apple Store will now support a new subscription-based app system that will allow users to front up money for applications that will continuously rollout content over a set period of time.
