Apple has found itself under fire from users and gay rights activists having approved a so called ‘gay cure’ app that claims to offer users “freedom from homosexuality.”
Exodus International, an iPhone and iPad app released last month by a religious ministry of the same name, is reported to have received more than 80,000 complaints having hit the Apple App Store and being deemed by the Cupertino tech giant as containing “no objectionable content.”
According to the controversial religious group, Exodus International and its new app release can give users “freedom from homosexuality through the power of Jesus.”
Despite Apple’s notoriously strict constraints about what can and cannot be included in iOS based applications, the company that will not allow nudity or pornographic images within apps seemingly happily passed an app that according to its iTunes listing “is committed to encouraging, educating and equipping the Body of Christ to address the issue of homosexuality with grace and truth.”
Having caused an outcry within the gay community, Ben Summerskill, Chief Executive of the gay rights group Stonewall announced of the Exodus International release: "At Stonewall, we've all been on this app since 8am and we can assure your readers it's having absolutely no effect.” He added: "Apple might consider thinking about their customer base and the penchant many lesbian and gay people have for ethical consumerism when endorsing an offensive app like this."
It is not just the gay community which is objecting to the release and acceptance of this app, however, iTunes account holders have hit out at Apple with a number of users criticising the company’s decisions. Whilst one user dubbed ‘Big fan…………..’ declared on the app’s App Store page: “This is hateful and contemptible. It does not belong on the App Store,” other users have shared equal disgust.
Whilst adam.iphone said: “How can Apple have let this app pass? This app is promoting religion based bullying and homophobia,” LanguageLearnerURDU wrote: “A disgusting homophobic app that Apple should not have allowed. Shame on you Apple!”
Should Apple have allowed the Exodus International app into the App Store? Let us know what you think of the so called ‘gay cure’ app via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.
