20. Apple iPhone 3GS

Well, there's just so much to like about this all rounder, isn't there? We could choose the excellent internet, the new camera that's almost is good enough to make us stop moaning about the iPhone always having a rubbish snapper (but not quite, though we do love the autofocus).

We could talk about the increase in speed over previous iterations or the great graphical processing power of the iPhone 3GS. We could even chat about the fact voice control is good, but a little bit pointless 90 per cent of time.

However, we think it's best to say that the best thing about the iPhone is it's an all rounder, the phone for every demographic. While it does some things wrong, it more than makes up for it with the things it does right - we just wish it was a little bit cheaper.

Our quick verdict: Aside from video recording and a compass, the 3GS didn't add a huge amount to the family. That said, after the launch of the iPhone 4, it's not that much cheaper than the current device, and given the huge step up in technology Apple's latest phone achieved, the iPhone 3GS represents nothing more than a slightly more budget version of a very good phone.

Nokia n900 review

19. Nokia N900

The Nokia N900 is actually a re-entry into our top 20 mobile phones, which shows the enduring power of this seemingly unloved Nokia child.

It's not a phone for everyone, that's for sure - it's chunky, has a resistive screen, uses an OS that no other device does - but it's been a mainstay among fans due to the sheer amount of stuff you can do with it.

Modders and hackers love being able to do things like write programs to control your TV using the infra-red port, or use the blindingly simple music streaming or RSS feeds.

There's also a top notch QWERTY keyboard underneath, and as much multi-tasking (with big thumbnails) as you could like, and that's before we even talk about the fact you can get Firefox mobile on there and soon the next-gen MeeGo OS.

Our quick verdict: It's an odd phone the Nokia N900 - it's not got the same exposure as the like of the Nokia N8 for instance - but for the sheer range of functionality and easy to use features, it's quickly becoming something of a modern cult classic. Plus the launch of the N8 means great deals on the N900 too!

the-definitive-samsung-wave-review

18. Samsung Wave

Samsung has made the somewhat left-field decision to launch its own OS and, with the new Samsung Wave, it gets a phone with top-notch hardware to debut it on.

This isn't just another 'and me' Samsung phone ? it's crammed to the hilt with high-end features, such as HD video recording, a 1GHz Samsung-made Hummingbird processor, a super-slim chassis, the latest Super AMOLED screen and multi-touch support right out of the box.

However, it's still rocking Samsung's TouchWiz overlay, which is great if you like Samsung phones, but a very different experience for those joining the Korean giant for the first time.

It's not got the market penetration of the Samsung Galaxy S, but for those that have picked it up it's a great offering for those on a tighter budget - plus it has the scarce AMOLED screen on board too.

Our quick verdict: The screen is ace, the chassis feels slimmer than the iPhone 4 and the processor whips along at a nice pace. Sadly, the new Bada OS is too nascent to be seen as a contender, but this is a phone that hopefully more people will be hankering after as the app store increases.

17. HTC Legend

The HTC Legend is the follow-up to the super-successful HTC Hero. For many months, the Hero was the top dog in the Android world. But with the arrival of the HTC Legend and Desire, that was always going to change in 2010.

Featuring a high-res OLED screen, as well as the latest version of Android from Google, HTC clearly set out the Legend to be the beautiful one in the family. The phone also packs a sumptuous unibody aluminium chassis ? taking more than a few visual cues from Apple's MacBook range.

The sad thing is with the launch of the HTC Desire at the same time, the Legend sort of got lost in the fog. Add to that the lack of live wallpapers and no Android 2.2 update as yet, and you can see why it's slipping down our list.

However, it's still a fantastic Android phone and one you'll be proud to pull out in the pub, so make sure you consider this in your smartphone choice.

Our quick verdict: The Legend might not have the impressiveness of the Desire, but that doesn't mean it doesn't shine in its own light. The aluminium unibody is brilliant and despite having a much 'slower' processor, the lag is minimal on this Android 2.1 device.

blackberry bold 9780

16. BlackBerry Bold 9780

What does the BlackBerry Bold 9780 add over the original 9700? Well, not a lot if we're honest - BB OS 6.0 and extra RAM plus an upgraded camera are all that's on offer, and don't forget the original 9700 is getting the OS 6.0 upgrade in the near future too.

But it's still the best BlackBerry device in this form factor on the market, and the extra power really translates into a decent media experience - we just wish that internet browser was a bit better though.

Our Quick Verdict - the Bold 9780 is on our list in the place of the original 9700 - it doesn't add enough to break into the top ten, but at least BB OS 6.0 is a step in the right direction and in its QWERTY/non-touch category, it can't be beaten.

Samsung galaxy europa review

15. Samsung Galaxy Europa

Samsung taken the UI from the Galaxy S and pushed into a much more budget package for the Galaxy Europa.

Featuring top-notch contact integration and fast operation that belies the 600MHz processor, the Galaxy Europa is a smaller phone that fits nicely in the hand.

The 2MP camera actually performs much better than you'd expect, and while the low-res screen isn't great for web browsing, the 180 price tag (or 10 a month deals) really help offset that.

Our quick verdict: Competing heavily with the HTC Wildfire for the term of 'best budget Android phone', the Galaxy Europa performs better than you'd expect and still retains more than a modicum of pocket-friendliness.

BlackBerry torch review

14. BlackBerry Torch

RIM's efforts to court both the consumer and business market have been troubled so far: how do you combine the slickness of a touchscreen with the function of a QWERTY keyboard?

Simple: do both together and hope that the resulting Franken-phone still looks nice. Thankfully with the BlackBerry Torch we've been spared the angry mobs, as a slick touchscreen and easy to use keyboard make it a joy to use.

The new BlackBerry OS 6 is a nice touch and adds a whole host of gestures to the smartphone mix as well as offering new integrated media and RSS functionality.

Our quick verdict: The BlackBerry Torch still struggles to fit everything in: a touchscreen, keyboard, next-gen OS and slimline chassis, but the result is still pleasing to use. We need to see an upgraded browser still, and the keyboard might be a little cramped for some, but it's still a definite upgrade on the likes of the BlackBerry Bold 9700.

13. HTC Wildfire

The HTC Wildfire is a budget offering from the Taiwanese firm, and it's taking a slightly different tact to its bigger brothers.

It looks a lot like the HTC Desire, but it's got a better screen than the HTC Tattoo and it's packing the same processor as the HTC Hero... got all that?

The main thing to realise is that the Wildfire is a budget phone and has been priced accordingly at around 20 a month on contract, which means those that want a Desire-like experience on the cheap can now do so.

Our quick verdict: We liked the HTC Tattoo for its decent Android rendition, but ultimately the hardware was flawed. The Wildfire makes up for that issue and packs the best of Android 2.1 (and soon android 2.2) into a very cheap little package.

nokia-e72

12. HTC HD7

We so wanted to keep the HTC HD2 in our top 20 best mobile phones, as the skin it offers on top of Windows Mobile 6.5 almost makes it a usuable OS.

But the presence of the superior Windows Phone 7 means we've had to drop it, and its replacement is the similar size and spec HTC HD7.

We like the 4.3-inch screen, although it won't be right from some, and the dual speakers on the front and 5MP camera with dual LED flash are also more than half-decent.

The lock button is a little hidden away at the top of the screen, but we're loving the little kickstand at the back for hands-free movie watching.

Our quick verdict: The HTC HD7 is going to be a little bit too large for some hands, and the HD camera can be a little choppy, but beyond that we get the feeling the massive-screened behemoth is going to get something of a cult following.

Motorola milestone 2

11. Motorola Milestone 2

The Milestone was a so-so phone in some people's eyes, but a few hardware tweaks and the addition of Android 2.2 has recharged it for the sequel.

The Motoblur interface might be a bit bloated for some, but the processor is able and speedy and the media experience is top end for a phone of this calibre.

Fans of a QWERTY will like the responsive keys, but the larger-fingered among us might struggle a bit.

Our Quick Verdict - One of the best QWERTY devices out there, the Milestone 2 combines a top end Android experience in a surprisingly svelte package.

10. LG Optimus 7

We've chosen the LG Optimus 7 as the pick of the Windows Phone 7 bunch simply because of the extras LG has put on the Optimus 7, including an awesome augmented reality browser that shows the weather when you point it at the sky.

The PlayTo DLNA service is ace too, making it a breeze to send content to your big screen TV, and the build quality isn't too shabby either.

We're quickly loving Windows Phone 7 as a quality smartphone OS, so combine the slick response and deep feature integration of that with LG's hardware and you've got a winner.

Our quick verdict: Windows Phone 7 looks like it might just become one of the 'cool' smartphone platforms of the future, and if you want some cool functionality out of the box, the LG Optimus 7 is up there with the best.

9. Orange San Francisco

Android is one of the big winners in our top 20 list, but it's sad that there aren't more budget devices on the market that really capture our imagination.

Well thankfully the Orange San Francisco has emerged as a real contender, with a great build, slick operation and clear screen - all for under 100 as well.

It's 'only' got Android 2.1, but an upgrade is in the works, and despite that you still get a fast response from the capacitive screen and all the widgets and home screens you've come to expect from Android.

There are some trade-offs: don't buy this if you want to take quality pics or are an avid radio listener, for instance, but overall it's a super phone for the price.

Our quick verdict: The Samsung Galaxy Europa is the only phone that comes close to the San Francisco in the budget stakes, but even that can't compete with the responsive processor and high level of customisation on offer here.

the-definitive-sony-ericsson-xperia-x10-review

8. Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini / Mini Pro

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini should be nothing more than a shrunken version of the Xperia X10 ? but in reality it's a whole new phone that gives Android a complete makeover.

Oh yes, it's small. Sony Ericsson isn't joking when it says the Xperia X10 Mini is the same size as a credit card. Obviously it's a lot thicker, but the overall size and weight of the super-small Android phone is about equivalent to a packet of Swan matches. It is tiny.

The exterior is smooth with only three buttons on the face of the phone ? Menu, Home and Back ? and there's no D-pad or joystick whatsoever here.

For a phone so affordable ? currently going for around 200 on PAYG deals ? the X10 Mini has a remarkably high-class feel about it.

We've mixed it together with the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Mini Pro as it seems consumers are buying both in equal measure - and they're so similar that it really depends on whether you're fan of the mini-QWERTY keyboard or not.

It's sadly only Android 1.6 still, and the upgrade still hasn't arrived as promised - but the charm and quirkiness of the X10 Mini / Mini Pro means that's less annoying than it would be on other phones.

Our quick verdict: The clever implementation of Android with customisable corner icons and a simple yet effective keyboard means it's very easy to use this phone, and even the internet is still a good experience for the world's smallest smartphone.

It's far, far better than the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, as that has issues with its keyboard and battery life as well as a much higher cost, which is why we don't consider it good enough for this top 20 list.

7. Nokia N8

If you've been a Nokia fan for years, then you'll have noticed that the Finnish firm hasn't been competing at the sharp end of the game for a while now.

The likes of the N97 and X6 have both been trumpeted by Nokia over the last year or so, but neither has particularly won critical acclaim, mostly due to a sub-par OS when compared to the whizz-bang-iness of the iPhone and Android set, as well as taking a veritable age to start using the latest technology, like capacitive screens and slimmer lines.

Now, though, the N8 is here, bringing all manner of high end features to a Nokia phone: 12MP camera, HD video recording, reams of internal storage and a high end media player, as well as the new Symbian^3 OS.

Our quick verdict: This is hardware at the sharp end of nearly every category, which is sure to bring a smile to the tech-lovers' heart. It's a phone that polarises opinion though - some people prefer a snazzier user interface, which the Nokia N8 fails to deliver. Others love the power of Symbian^3 and can see past the slight lag in the ageing UI - and for them this phone is without compare.

6. HTC Desire Z

The Desire Z brings the screen size of the Desire, drops the processor and whacks in a QWERTY keyboard, and roars in at number 6 on our list.

The solid build quality (hinge aside) and the next generation Sense UI make it a real fan favourite already, and the contract prices aren't too bad either for a top end phone.

It's chunky, granted, and some people will still look at it and decide that it's time for a touchscreen-only device - but it's still a decent phone even without the hinged keyboard.

Our Quick verdict - If you're into a QWERTY, then this could be your favourite phone, with customisable buttons and speedy operation.

5. Google Nexus S

The first Android 2.3 phone is also one of the first with NFC capabilities and a curved Super AMOLED screen from Samsung.

It's a 'Pure Google' experience, which means no messing about waiting for networks to bring you the update; if Google likes it, you'll have it.

The price has dropped just before launch, making it a much more palatable 430, and competes very well indeed with the iPhone 4 and others in the top phone game.

The build quality might feel a little suspect at first, but is robust enough and sits in the hand well, and that screen is just superb for the internet and media.

Our Quick View- A 'no frills' handset that delivers on the specs - a quick price drop makes this very affordable and practical for the developer and early adopter alike.

4. Samsung Galaxy S

The Samsung Galaxy S is the most tech-heavy phone Samsung has ever made, and TechRadar got the chance to give it a good going over.

The Galaxy S represents a real milestone for both Samsung and Google, as it's the most powerful and feature-rich phone on the market at the moment, edging the HTC Desire plus adding the marketing clout of the Korean electronics giant.

But with Apple stepping up its game with the iPhone 4, Android and Samsung need a big hitter to step up and show the world that they can produce a phone that can take on the might of Jobs, so check out the Samsung Galaxy S and make up your own minds.

Our quick verdict: The Samsung Galaxy S is everything that's good about the Wave, but with Android power to back it up. The Super AMOLED screen is awe inspiring, and the 1GHz Hummingbird processor means the phone never misses a beat.

It's one of the contenders for the top spot if the forthcoming Android 2.2 update gives it a big boost, but currently a slight lag in the UI and erratic GPS and Wi-Fi are the only slight foibles that keep it from top spot.

3. HTC Desire HD

We were all waiting for it - the phone to finally usurp the HTC Desire as our best smartphone (and best mobile phone, best Android phone and, well, best gadget) and we thought the Desire HD was going to be it.

But sadly, it's not quite made it to the summit, and hasn't even managed to negotiate past the iPhone 4.

Don't get us wrong - this is a fantastic bit of kit, one of the best smartphones around, with a super slick interface, massive screen and overhauled interface that makes us coo with delight every time our finger sashayed across the display.

But battery life is vapourised with the massive LCD display; at 4.3-inches, you can see why it needs so much power. Add to that some video issues, and you can see that it's not quite got the juice to make it to the summit.

Our quick verdict: We were hoping we'd found our new number one in the HTC Desire HD, but despite an 8MP camera, new HTC Sense UI and improved processor, the battery life is even worse than the original Desire.

It's still very much worth a look, and if you like your screen on the larger side (and want the best Android can offer) then you should definitely check it out.

iphone 4

2. Apple iPhone 4

The iPhone 4 is certainly the most impressive iPhone ever, and a big step up from the iPhone 3GS. The flat body is only 9.3 millimetres thick, 24 per cent thinner than the iPhone 3GS at its thickest. It feels great in the hand, and at the keynote Steve Jobs remarked, "Its closest kin is a beautiful old Leica camera."

By far the most in-your-face improvement is iPhone 4's 960x640 screen. It's got 326 pixels per inch, and we're talking tiny pixels, only 78 micrometers wide.

The Retina display, especially, is hands-down the clearest, most enjoyable screen we've seen on a handheld, and the sheer amount of technology packed into the device is surprising.

The iPhone 4 would definitely top our list, were it not for the fairly major flaw which sees 3G reception disappear when you hold the phone with your left hand. It's an embarrassing problem which mars an otherwise brilliant handset.

Our quick verdict: We think people are making a little bit too much of a fuss about the reception issue ? a little shift of the hand sorts things out ? but on a premium phone it shouldn't be there at all. It's still a great phone, but we're disappointed as this could have been an all time classic without it.

It's also a little expensive, and while the reception problem has been minimised by free bumpers, for the price this phone should be absolutely flawless and sadly isn't.

htc desire

1. HTC Desire

The HTC Desire is essentially the same phone as the Google Nexus One, only with HTC's Sense UI overlay and a reworked chassis. Read: it's like a Nexus One only better.

The Desire is a little on the large side thanks to its 3.7-inch OLED screen, but HTC has had a look at the few foibles the Nexus One had and sorted them out. Later models have a Super LCD screen which isn't quite as vibrant as the OLED, but is still top notch for media viewing.

Messaging on the HTC Desire is a dream ? despite not having a physical keyboard, the eerily responsive typing correction on this device is so sharp we could practically shut our eyes and mash our hands into the keyboard and still type a perfect message.

And it's testament to the perfect design that it's held the Desire HD off the top spot; the 3.7-inch screen and smooth frame offer a far nicer feel in the hand, and it even offers slightly better battery life too.

If the HTC Desire was to get the upgraded Sense UI, complete with extra HTC widgets and downloadable content, it would be virtually unstoppable, especially as the price will hopefully begin to drop in the near future.

Our quick verdict: People will inevitably ask if we really think the Desire is better than the iPhone 4, and the truth is it both is and it isn't. It doesn't have the headline grabbing specs perhaps, but it doesn't have the notable flaws either, and that's a sign of a well made phone that won't frustrate users who 'take a punt' on their first HTC.

It's still the best of all worlds in our opinion, ahead of the newer Desire HD, and as and when the price comes down and the UI (hopefully) gets upgraded this will continue to be a staggering piece of kit.
